Virtual Laboratory Teaching & Learning: A Blended Approach

Rooney, Denise (2024) Virtual Laboratory Teaching & Learning: A Blended Approach. In: Higher Education Authority Teaching and Learning Conference 2024, Dublin.

Abstract

The Virtual Labs HCI Pillar 3 initiative, a multi-institutional collaboration involving Maynooth University, UCC, DCU, TUS Midlands Midwest, and Dundalk Institute of Technology, alongside enterprise stakeholders. Led by Denise Rooney, the project integrates pre-lab digital learning, face-to-face laboratory sessions, and post-lab virtual simulations to enhance student engagement, preparation, conceptual understanding, and practical skill development. The blended design addresses common laboratory challenges—such as limited lab time and inconsistent preparation—by incorporating interactive simulations and commercial digital packages to visualise molecular-level processes. Evaluated through staff and student surveys and focus groups, early feedback indicates increased preparedness, confidence, and reinforcement of learning. The initiative also includes digital badging, enterprise engagement, and cross-institutional collaboration, contributing to innovation in laboratory teaching and assessment
