Gormley, Brian (2024) Embedding Sustainability in the Curriculum in TU Dublin through Policy and Innovative Teaching Methods. In: Higher Education Authority Teaching and Learning Conference 2024, Dublin.
Outlines TU Dublin’s strategic and policy-driven approach to integrating sustainability across all programmes. Aligned with the University’s Strategic Intent 2030—where sustainability is embedded as a learning outcome in every programme—the initiative integrates sustainability within curricula rather than as a stand-alone module, with progressive development of knowledge and skills. Key enablers include a Sustainability Education Policy, integration into the Academic Quality Framework, programme validation and review processes, and a sustainability-focused graduate attribute based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals and GreenComp. Capacity-building initiatives include a national Education for Sustainability Digital Badge, staff CPD, programme-level workshops, and innovative experiential learning activities such as Climate Fresk, Doughnut Economics workshops, and a sustainable shelter design-and-build project. The presentation highlights the role of institutional policy, staff development, and applied learning experiences in embedding sustainability systemically across teaching and learning
