Ross, Owen and O’Connell, Frances (2024) Pathways to Success: Early Wins in the TUS Transitions and Student Success Strategy. In: Higher Education Authority Teaching and Learning Conference 2024, Dublin.
Outlines the strategic development and early impact of the Technological University of the Shannon’s (TUS) Transitions and Student Success (TSS) Strategy. Positioned within national policy frameworks—including the National Forum’s Understanding and Enabling Student Success, the National Access Plan, and the Higher Education Systems Performance Framework—the strategy adopts a whole-of-institution, evidence-based approach to improving retention and progression. A flagship initiative, TUS Second Shot (launched April 2023), combines central and departmental interventions to support students undertaking autumn repeat assessments. Early indicators show increases in repeat success rates (up to 5.3% in the second iteration) and reductions in non-progression. The presentation emphasises the importance of multi-annual planning, dual-level engagement, data dashboards, and preventative as well as curative measures in building sustainable student success initiatives
