Plunkett, Niamh and Haran, Maureen (2024) Scaling New Heights in Ireland: ALTITUDE The National Charter for Universal Design in Irish Tertiary Education. In: Higher Education Authority Teaching and Learning Conference 2024, Dublin.
Outlines the development and national rollout of ALTITUDE, a cross-sector initiative led by Atlantic Technological University (ATU). The presentation details the strategic foundations, collaborative design process, and implementation framework of the ALTITUDE Charter, which aims to embed Universal Design (UD) across learning, teaching and assessment, student supports and services, physical environments, and digital environments. Developed through extensive literature review, staff and student consultation, and cross-sectoral dialogue, the Charter is accompanied by an Unlocking Inclusion Toolkit and Technical Report to support institutional adoption. The initiative positions Universal Design as a systemic, strategic enabler of inclusive and sustainable tertiary education, supported by a growing national community of practice and formal adoption processes.
