Phillips, Declan and Quill, Eoin (2024) Undergraduate Learning Experiences from Engaging in an Interfaculty Cross-Disciplinary Learning Activity – Engineers act as Expert Witness in Moot Court. In: Higher Education Authority Teaching and Learning Conference 2024, Dublin.
This case study from the University of Limerick (UL) presents Undergraduate Learning Experiences from Engaging in an Interfaculty Cross-Disciplinary Learning Activity – Engineers Act as Expert Witness in Moot Court, an initiative running for thirteen years each autumn semester. Led jointly by the School of Engineering and the School of Law, the project brings together final-year civil engineering and construction management students (circa 110) with second-year tort law students, engaging approximately 230 students annually. Engineering students investigate real construction failure cases and act as expert witnesses in a moot court trial presided over by law students. The initiative promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, professional communication, application of technical and legal knowledge in authentic contexts, and the development of teamwork and organisational skills. Evaluation through reflective assignments and essays indicates enhanced professional readiness, communication competence, and student motivation.
