Clavin, Alma and Hurley, Elizabeth (2024) Embedding Sustainability across the Curriculum at the University of Galway: An interdisciplinary approach. In: Higher Education Authority Teaching and Learning Conference 2024, Dublin.
This case study from University of Galway outlines Embedding Sustainability across the Curriculum: An Interdisciplinary Approach (2024/2025 and ongoing), led by the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT). The initiative aims to embed Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) across all 65 undergraduate programmes through SDG mapping, sustainability competency mapping (aligned with UNESCO frameworks), discipline-specific curriculum evaluation, and tailored backward design approaches. A complementary 7-week module, Embedding Sustainability in the Curriculum (CEL6109), is offered as part of the MA in Academic Practice and as a micro-credential to support staff development. The project is supported through SATLE funding for two dedicated Lecturers in Sustainability/ESD and aligns with the University’s Strategic Plan, Sustainability Strategy, and the National Strategy for Education for Sustainable Development.
