Balfe, John (2024) Cultivating Inclusive Playgrounds: A Collaborative Educational Initiative for Early Childhood Development. In: Higher Education Authority Teaching and Learning Conference 2024, Dublin.
This case study from South East Technological University (SETU) describes “Cultivating Inclusive Playgrounds: A Collaborative Educational Initiative for Early Childhood Development” (2024–2025 and ongoing), led by the Department of Humanities. The initiative brings together third-level Early Childhood Education and Care students and primary school children to collaboratively redesign playgrounds using Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. Integrating interdisciplinary learning, digital storytelling, AI-assisted peer assessment, and community partnerships, the project promotes inclusive education, digital transformation, and academic integrity. It aligns with national and international frameworks including the UNESCO Education for Sustainable Development Framework, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and Ireland’s National Digital Strategy for Education.
