O’Connell, Sarah (2026) Linking Digital Engagement to Clinical Performance in Podiatric Medicine. In: Higher Education Authority Teaching and Learning Conference 2025, 2025, Dublin.
This case study outlines an initiative within the Discipline of Podiatric Medicine at the University of Galway to link digital engagement with clinical performance. Developed in response to identified gaps in consistency, accessibility, and confidence in clinical skills acquisition, the project introduced a blended-learning model incorporating a standardised Musculoskeletal Assessment Workbook, over 30 short clinical demonstration videos with transcripts, and Canvas Studio analytics to track student engagement. Pilot evaluation in 2025 demonstrated a moderate positive correlation between digital engagement and OSCE performance (r = 0.39, p = 0.031), alongside reported reductions in student anxiety and increased confidence. The initiative integrates Universal Design for Learning principles and learning analytics to support data-informed, inclusive, and scalable clinical education.
