Abstract

This case study outlines the development and impact of Learning Communities at Munster Technological University (MTU), initiated in 2019 by the Teaching and Learning Unit. Designed to support continuous professional development and collaborative innovation, the initiative funds and facilitates discipline-specific and interdisciplinary learning communities across all five faculties. Originally targeting 30 communities over six years, the programme has supported 82 communities to date, with approximately 1,200 staff participating. Learning communities focus on areas such as work placement, generative AI, entrepreneurship, and education for sustainable development, fostering best practice sharing, industry collaboration, and student–staff partnerships. The initiative demonstrates how structured institutional support and reduced administrative barriers can enable sustainable, grassroots-led enhancement of teaching and learning.
