Defending Human Teaching Expertise in the Age of AI: A Call to Action

Gibson, Patricia (2026) Defending Human Teaching Expertise in the Age of AI: A Call to Action. In: Higher Education Authority Teaching and Learning Conference 2025, 2025, Dublin.

Abstract

This case study from IADT presents a critical framework for AI in education that foregrounds the irreplaceable expertise of the human teacher. Developed by Dr Patricia Gibson, the initiative proposes a values-based framework to guide educators in working with AI in ways that are politically, ethically, pedagogically, and socially responsible. Structured as a series of reflective “calls to action,” the framework encourages educators to critically appraise AI’s influence on teaching, knowledge production, collaboration, and institutional practice. Grounded in critical EdTech scholarship and aligned with national and UNESCO guidance on generative AI, the project promotes transdisciplinary dialogue and positions human judgement and democratic values at the centre of AI integration in higher education.
