O'Kelly, Brendan, Orr, Trevor and Farrell, Eric (2009) GEOTECHNICAL TEACHING AND RESEARCH REACHES FIFTY YEAR MILESTONE AT TCD. Engineers Journal, 63 (1). pp. 26-27. ISSN 03321711

Abstract

The article explores the creation of geotechnical engineering with emphasis on the development of the curriculum and research laboratories in soil mechanics at the School of Engineering, Trinity College Dublin (TCD) in Ireland, from the initial stage just over 50 years ago to the present day. Key elements to successful geotechnical design are sustainability, engineering economics and judgement derived from past experience. Over the years, the Geotechnical Research Group at TCD has steadily expanded with the addition of Trevor Orr in 1977.
