Abstract

This chapter discusses the development of a mechatronics management curriculum so as to demonstrate the possibility of developing higher-education programs in advanced engineering. The chapter reviews how it is possible to use theories of engineering and professional competence in technology to develop a coherent higher-education program that has the potential to deliver on aggressive economic and educational objectives. Emerging economies in the midst of the fundamental restructuring of higher education can benefit from radical approaches to engineering education program design. The program described in the chapter benefits from the unique situation of the University of Business and Technology and the unique opportunity to develop the first mechatronics management program in the Balkan region. This uniqueness is ensured by a series of tradeoffs necessary in the curriculum design. For these trades-offs to be well reasoned, the design team requires a complex theoretical framework by which to inform the curriculum design decisions. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved.
