Technology as subject and tool for intergenerational learning: DCU's Intergenerational Learning Programme, 5 years on

The Intergenerational Learning Programme in DCU is a unique project that empowers older people to access a third level campus, bridging gaps in relationships between generations by linking them to younger mentors. Dialogical learning opens younger students to new experiences and ways of thinking, and gives them a new vision of ageing The Intergenerational Learning Programme has grown from its inception in 2005 as a pilot project, when some 30 older learners were involved in modules on ICT and communications, to its current stage: approximately 200 older learners and over 80 DCU student volunteers were involved in the programme last semester. Whereas our modules now cover a range of subjects introducing third level topics, such as Health, Culture and Society, or Politics and Law, the mainstay of our activities remains linked to digital literacies. Over a period of five years, the need for digital literacies has grown as the boundaries between online and offline become ever more blurred in our daily life; whereas our learners used to be coached in the use of a mouse, they are now owners of mobile technologies, and very much aware of new concepts and practices encountered on social media sites, from Facebook Likes to Selfies. Our pedagogical model of tutor, student mentors and older learners has similarly evolved, giving increased ownership of learning to both generations. This presentation will outline the evolution of the programme, and highlight the benefits to both generations, and the different types of learning mediated by technology, as well as emerging issues.
