Transitions to University: Insights on FET Learners' Pathways to Higher Education in Ireland – Lessons for Policy and Practice

This report explores the experiences of first-year Dublin City University (DCU) undergraduate students who entered degree programmes via the QQI Further Education and Training (FET) route, focusing on DC115 Accounting and Finance and DC121 Computer Science. Drawing primarily on quantitative data and supporting literature, the study highlights both challenges and achievements for QQI-FET entrants. Findings indicate strong acceptance and retention rates, but lower performance in mathematics and laboratory-based modules compared with other entry cohorts. The report identifies the need for enhanced academic support, improved progression data tracking, and stronger partnerships between FET institutions and DCU to better prepare learners for successful transition into higher education.
