Massive omission of consent (MOOC): ethical research in educational big data studies

This review investigates reporting of ethics and formal ethical approval in empirical studies of MOOCs. From 826 accessible papers involving human participants, only a small proportion explicitly discussed ethics or approval. The authors consider the implications for educational big-data research and call for stronger researcher training, stakeholder dialogue and clearer expectations in academic publishing.
