Abstract

Increasing numbers of students with dyslexic spectrum disorder have been starting third-level education in Ireland in recent years. Some are currently learning a second language at the Dublin Institute of Technology, especially if they are pursuing a course in the area of tourism and food. In this article we will recount our experience of facilitating learners with dyslexia in the third-level classroom and beyond. After defining how dyslexia affects the third-level student, this account will suggest many initiatives a teacher can use in the classroom, but also supports outside the classroom, including institutional responses, and adaptations for language curricula and assessments.
