Abstract

ICT evaluation research is active across many fields of study. However, comparative to other sectors, there are a limited number of studies concerning ICT evaluation in Higher Education Institutions (HEI). This paucity of research needs to be addressed as the need for HEIs to improve operational performance is now more urgent and challenging. This is due to declining student numbers and changes in student profiles, increased competition between educational establishments, and the need for transparency with respect to academic activities. This paper addresses the implementation of a large-scale ICT student administrative system across the Irish Institute of Technology (IoT) sector. The impact of system introduction across five IoTs is explored through a cross-case comparative analysis. System introduction across those IoTs was problematic; yet a significant flow of benefits also materialised. This paper explores the interconnectivity of these impacts and their variances across the case study sites. It further provides some policy guidelines for realising future rewards.
