## Abstract

In Ireland many engineering undergraduates begin third-level education with significant deficiencies in their core mathematical skills. Every year, in the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), a diagnostic test is given to incoming first-year students, consistently revealing problems in basic mathematics. In Portugal a similar test is given in Coimbra Institute of Engineering (ISEC). In this work details of both tests are given, along with the results of both of these tests. In addition this project intends to tweak some questions and add new questions to both tests so that we will have 12 questions, which are exactly the same, given to both sets of first year students. © 2013 IEEE.
