The VLE ten years on: has anything changed?

O'Rourke, Kevin (2014) The VLE ten years on: has anything changed? In: The 15th Educational Technology Conference of the Irish Learning Technology Association (ILTA). May 29th and 30th, UCD, Dublin, Ireland.

Abstract

When asked in 2013 regarding possible improvements to DIT's VLE, one anonymous lecturer replied: I see webcourses as a kind of 'ghetto'. Instead of adding more and more features to it (blogs, wikis, chatrooms, etc), we should be using the 'real-world' equivalents. VLEs such as Blackboard and Moodle have certainly become part of the expected landscape of Irish higher education. But have they had any measurable impact in the main on teaching and learning practices? Using both quantitative and qualitative data gathered from over 200 academic staff at DIT, this presentation seeks to explore the impact of technology on teaching practices.
