Abstract

This chapter reports on the use of a practical exercise to help lecturers to consider expanding therepertoire of activities that they use in their teaching. It sets the discussion within the frameworkof a particular set of assumptions about the nature of higher education and the characteristics ofteaching in a higher education context. It outlines the instrument and the exercises used with participantsin the workshops for academic staff from three higher education campuses. It includesobservations about the processes that occurred. The chapter concludes by outlining the valueof the exercise, suggesting practical ways it can be used at individual and group level, both bylecturers and staff developers, and offering suggestions for further work.
